Nouakchott: The Governments of Mauritania and Chad today signed funding agreements for the Regional Engagement for Learning and Collaboration in Education (RELANCE) Project, supported by the World Bank and the Federal Republic of Germany, totaling $137 million. This significant initiative aims to transform the education systems in both nations by bolstering sector governance and expanding access to inclusive learning pathways. The project targets over 850,000 young people, with a focus on including girls and learners with special needs.
According to World Bank, the RELANCE Project addresses regional challenges such as demographic growth, educational disparities, and the rising demand for job-relevant skills. It offers a collaborative and integrated approach, building on ongoing efforts to enhance education systems while also introducing regional mechanisms for coordination, resource sharing, and innovation.
Dr. Aboubakar Assidick Tchoroma, Minister of National Education and Civic Promotion of Chad, highlighted the impact of the Regional Open School, stating that it provides access to adapted learning paths for thousands of young people, especially those distant from traditional educational structures.
The project benefits from substantial financial backing from the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW under the Sahel and West Africa Coast Multi-Donor Trust Fund. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to regional cooperation.
H.E. Dr. Florian Reindel, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mauritania, emphasized that RELANCE embodies an ambitious and pragmatic regional approach. By supporting this initiative, Germany reaffirms its commitment to aiding Sahel countries in constructing more inclusive education systems rooted in local realities.
The World Bank is aiding participating countries through a strategic partnership that merges technical support with long-term financing. RELANCE builds on existing national projects, such as the Basic Education Sector Support Project in Mauritania and the Project to Improve Learning Outcomes in Basic Education in Chad, while adding a unique regional dimension.
