Khartoum: The United Nations (UN) continues its efforts to provide critical assistance in Sudan, focusing on containing the cholera outbreak in the Darfur region amidst ongoing security challenges. In collaboration with its humanitarian partners, the UN is striving to meet the needs of affected populations across the country. According to African Press Organization, the World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting health authorities in launching a 10-day cholera vaccination campaign in Tawila locality, North Darfur State. The campaign aims to protect 95,000 displaced individuals, addressing a cholera outbreak that has resulted in nearly 2,900 reported cases and 247 deaths across six states since its declaration in June. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and its partners have also provided emergency shelter and essential household items to 12,000 people in Tawila, Al Lait, and Um Hajaleej localities. However, insecurity remains a pressing issue, with about 1,300 people fleeing villages in U m Baru locality, near the Sudan-Chad border, due to increased violence. In South Darfur State, reports indicate that three drone strikes hit Nyala city, affecting civilian areas and causing casualties. In Blue Nile State, increased insecurity has displaced over 3,300 individuals from villages in Geisan locality, prompting them to seek safety in Wad Al Mahi locality. Rising intercommunal tensions in South and Central Darfur states have resulted in several deadly incidents, underscoring the volatile situation. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) calls on all parties to protect civilians and infrastructure, and to ensure rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access.
