Lagos: The maiden edition of the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) National Table Tennis Championships is set to commence on Monday at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. This two-day event will feature students from various regions of the country competing for honors as part of the NSSF's ongoing efforts to revive grassroots sports and identify young talents.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the championship is integrated into a larger NSSF strategy aimed at engaging youths in sports and promoting early athletic development. It seeks to identify, train, and nurture future table tennis stars capable of representing Nigeria in major continental and global competitions in the coming years.
Funsho Usman, Secretary General of the NSSF, stated that the tournament is designed to provide students with real match experience, which is crucial for their long-term development. He elaborated that by competing under structured rules, young players would gain a better understanding of the demands of professional-level sport, thus bridging the gap between school and elite competition.
Usman emphasized Nigeria's rich sporting potential among the youth, who often lack platforms to develop their talents. At the NSSF, creating equal opportunities for all students to showcase their skills is a priority. This championship is not just about crowning winners, but about providing visibility, recognition, and a pathway for every participating student.
The competition aligns with the NSSF's mission of preparing students to transition from school-level sports to international representation. Usman confirmed that invitations were sent to schools and state teams nationwide, ensuring wide participation and fostering national unity through sport. The championship will be closely monitored by certified technical officials and national team scouts to identify and track promising players for future training. By involving national-level coaches and scouts, the NSSF ensures that emerging talents receive the right exposure and support from the beginning of their journey.
