Weekend sports galore at Henties Bay and Outjo

Henties Bay and Outjo will this weekend host a number of sports activities, with the Henties Bay annual charity cup and the inaugural Outjo constituency tournament taking place on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The annual Henties Bay charity cup, a football event initiated in 2015 to aid the less fortunate in the Henties Bay community, will be held at Omdel Stadium, while the Outjo constituency competition, which comprises football, netball and volleyball categories, will be held at the Etoshapoort sports field.

In an interview with Nampa on Thursday, Michael Skini, the chairperson and founder of the Henties Bay charity cup, revealed that the event’s initial goal is to generate funds to support disadvantaged members of the community, specifically pensioners and those living with disabilities.

According to Skini, the football tournament is additionally intended to serve as a platform for the exposure and discovery of young untapped talent at all professional football levels. He also noted that the tournament enhances the town’s economy as it draws a large crowd from throughout the country.

A total of N.dollars 50 000 will be up for grabs, with over 26 teams anticipated to take part. The winning team will get N.dollars 25 000, a trophy, and gold medals, while the runner-up will receive N.dollars 12 500 and the semi-final losers will each get N.dollars 6 250.

Square-Seven football club from Walvis Bay won the competition last year.

Helmut Fillimon said the Outjo constituency tournament will be the constituency’s first significant sporting event.

He stated that the competition was supported by the Kunene Regional Council and the town of Outjo and includes football, netball and volleyball.

“The aim is to make it a yearly event as we seek to bring the youth together and support them in sports activities while providing a platform for local business owners to earn profits through sales at the stadium,” Fillimon stated.

The winning volleyball team will get N.dollars 1 500, while the runner-up will receive N.dollars 1 000. The winning netball team will receive N.dollars 3 000, the runner-up will receive N.dollars 1 500, and the third-best team will receive N.dollars 500. The winner of the football category will get N.dollars 7 000, the runner-up will receive N.dollars 3 000, and the semi-final losers will each receive N.dollars 2 000.
