UN/Sahara: Djibouti Welcomes Morocco’s ‘Serious and Credible’ Efforts Aimed at Achieving Consensual Solution

New York (United Nations) - Djibouti welcomed, in New York, the "serious and credible" efforts that Morocco has tirelessly deployed within the framework of the autonomy initiative to achieve a consensual solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. "This initiative, which is commendable in more than one way and in accordance with the principles of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, as well as with all the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the UN, offers a solid and constructive basis for a peaceful political solution" to this artificial conflict, said Youssouf Aden Moussa, counselor at the Permanent Mission of Djibouti to the UN. Aden Moussa, who was speaking Tuesday before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, stressed that the autonomy initiative represents a "major proposal that demonstrates Morocco's willingness to achieve a lasting and peaceful solution to this conflict by taking the path of dialogue and negotiation in accordance w ith the principles of international law". "It outlines a consensual and mutually acceptable solution for all parties" and is intended to be a contribution to peace and stability, he pointed out, urging all parties to seize this opportunity to "build a sustainable and peaceful future and leave no one behind". He also expressed his country's support for the efforts made within the framework of the political process led under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General with a view to reaching a political, realistic, pragmatic, lasting and compromise solution to this regional dispute as recommended by the Security Council resolutions. Only a political solution to this artificial conflict and the strengthening of cooperation within the Maghreb region "will contribute significantly to consolidating stability and security" throughout the Sahel, he said.
