Abuja: Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to strengthen its commitment to integrity, accountability, and improved performance in its road safety duties. Addressing commanding officers during the 2025 Half-Year Strategy Session of the corps, held on Wednesday in Abuja, Akume emphasized the importance of the session as a platform for performance review and strategic planning to reduce road crashes and enhance safety on Nigerian roads. Represented by the new Permanent Secretary, Office of General Services, Sanusi Danjuma, Akume highlighted the session's role in monitoring and evaluating performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and determining training and development needs crucial to human resource development.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akume commended the FRSC for its achievements despite prevailing challenges. He noted Nigeria's election to host the Permanent Secretariat of the Africa Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies and its chairmanship of the West African Road Safety Organisation as clear indications of strategic leadership. Akume praised Nigeria for emerging as the best in Road Safety Management in Africa, describing these as commendable landmark achievements.
Addressing the issue of limited funds, Akume lauded the corps for its resilience and innovation, particularly its use of technology to enhance road safety management. He cited the FRSC Mobile App and the National Crash Information System as innovations that have significantly improved real-time traffic monitoring and data-driven decision-making. Akume asserted that these innovations demonstrate the corps' alignment with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at ensuring safety and security for all Nigerians.
Akume assured the corps of the government's continued support in realizing its vision of zero road traffic deaths. He urged participants to focus on the session's theme, 'Driving Change from Within: Reinforcing Integrity, Accountability and Performance,' which aligns with the government's vision to instill a culture of responsibility across all sectors. Akume encouraged participants to take ownership and direct decisions and resources towards achieving FRSC's corporate goals.
In his closing remarks, Akume commended the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, and the entire FRSC staff for their dedication and commitment, urging them to maintain the momentum in their efforts to improve road safety in Nigeria.
