Accra: The Vihiga Sub-County committee on multi-sectoral collaboration and coordination on security and peace has been urged to enhance security and peace during this festive season. Speaking today during a meeting to inaugurate the committee at DIDC hall, Vihiga Sub County DCC Linet Orina said that this committee is being formed as a follow-up on the countrywide jukwaa la usalama meetings that were spearheaded by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen. According to Kenya News Agency, Orina emphasized that peace and security begin with each individual, requiring concerted efforts from all stakeholders and partners to ensure their enhancement and maintenance. She noted that the committee should work to bridge local realities and national security gaps, advising against blaming the police for insecurity cases and incidents. Orina remarked, "If there is peace and security at the family level, there will be peace and security at the community level, and the whole nation will be peaceful and secure." She urged committ ee members and residents of Vihiga Sub-County to volunteer information on security issues within their jurisdictions, assuring that all information would be treated confidentially and witnesses protected. She also warned against forming kangaroo courts for issues like defilement, incest, and gender-based violence, stating that this would aid in eliminating such crimes in Vihiga. Sheikh Ali Ambenje praised the government for the initiative, stating that it would help solve crime and insecurity as all members feel appreciated and play a role in maintaining peace and security. Ambenje urged the community to stop blaming and complaining about police officers, highlighting that officers are few and cannot be everywhere, but individuals can contribute to peace and security. Vihiga County Director of Social Services Christine Owano called on parents to train their children to prevent crimes and insecurities, advocating for modern parenting methods that involve dialogue from a young age. Owano encouraged religi ous leaders to develop activities for children, teenagers, and youths during the festive season to deter them from engaging in criminal activities. The committee comprises members from various sectors, including civil society, transport, youth, interfaith, local peace actors, media, opinion leaders, and departmental heads. The committee is chaired by DCC Linet Orina, with Manase Lugadiru from Interfaith serving as vice-chairperson. The secretary is Vihiga Sub-County Administrator Caroline Anyienda, supported by vice secretary ACC Felix Maiya. Beatrice Chadulo, an opinion leader, serves as the treasurer.
