Nigeria Aims for 47% Emission Reduction by 2030 in Climate Initiative

Abuja: The Nigerian Government announces its ambitious target of achieving a 47 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030. This declaration was made by Mr Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, at the 2025 Edition of the Africa Climate Forum (ACF) in Abuja, themed 'Bolder, Greener, and Better Steps: Closing Transition Gaps in Africa'.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Keyamo, represented by Dr Obafemi Bajomo, Special Adviser on Foreign Direct Investments, emphasized the urgency of Nigeria's climate action. The minister stated that the nation aims to meet and exceed its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement with international support. The Energy Transition Plan is central to Nigeria's strategy, focusing on achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, expanding renewable energy, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The forum also highlighted Nigeria's efforts in climate-smart agriculture, reforestation under the Great Green Wall Initiative, and investments in climate education. Keyamo assured that the aviation sector is committed to sustainable transformation.

Amb. Isaac Parashina, Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, reiterated that climate change has transcended environmental concerns. He emphasized that Africa's challenge is not about vision but the alignment of aspirations with resources. Parashina cited Kenya's leadership in geothermal production and its ambitious plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2023 as part of a cultural shift towards environmental restoration.

Similarly, Dr Muhammad Dingyard, Minister of Labour and Employment, noted the significant role of the labour sector in Nigeria's climate goals. Represented by Dr James Obadiah, Dingyard emphasized the importance of transitioning to a greener economy for job creation in sustainable practices.

Prof. George Nwangwu, Director-General of the Global Centre for Law, Business and Economy, highlighted the complexity of global climate negotiations. He praised ACF's role since 2023 in fostering innovation and collaboration in climate action.

In a keynote address, Mrs Omotenioye Majekodunmi, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, stressed the council's collaboration with international partners to enhance Nigeria's climate data verification. Represented by Mr Michael Ivenso, she noted ACF's impact on shaping African climate conditions.
