Abuja: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has called on the media to actively challenge and correct the negative narratives surrounding Nigeria. Idris emphasized this during the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN) held in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Idris highlighted the importance of the conference theme, 'Broadcasting for Information Sovereignty, National Cohesion, and Digital Security', stating that it directly addresses the current realities and future aspirations of the nation. He stressed the vital role the media plays in fostering a stable, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.

Idris also pointed out the troubling trend of external actors attempting to portray Nigeria as a country plagued by religious intolerance. He refuted these claims, describing them as false and divisive, and urged the media to counter these narratives with factual and balanced reporting.

Furthermore, Idris noted the positive impact of President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms, citing a drop in inflation to a three-year low of 16 percent and a sustained reduction in food prices. He also addressed the recent kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, assuring that the government is committed to their safe return.

In addition, Idris announced the conviction of a top ISWAP commander, Hussaini Ismaila, as a testament to the country's growing capabilities in intelligence and prosecution.

Dr Tijjiani Ramalan, Chairman of IBAN, shared that Idris had sanctioned a meeting among key regulatory bodies to enhance the broadcast media sector's survival. Meanwhile, Raymond Dokpesi Jr., Chairman of the Organising Committee, highlighted the challenges faced by broadcasters and emphasized the need for support in promoting Nigerian narratives.

The conference also included representatives from various regulatory and media organizations, underscoring the collaborative effort to address these issues.
