Nouakchott: The Islamic Committee of the International Crescent has concluded its 39th regular session with the adoption of a series of resolutions aimed at enhancing humanitarian initiatives within member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The session, held in Nouakchott, focused on strengthening the capacities of national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies. According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the committee underscored the importance of ensuring safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid. It emphasized the protection of relief and medical workers and called for intensified support for crisis-affected groups in regions such as Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, the Sahel region, and the Lake Chad Basin. The committee approved reports and work plans for 2026 from its various departments and programs. These include the International Crescent Department, the Islamic Forum for International Humanitarian Law, and the Social Peacebuilding Center, among others. Additio nally, the committee highlighted the necessity of documenting Israeli violations in Palestinian territories and proposed establishing a specialized center for this purpose in collaboration with the Palestinian and Jordanian Red Crescent societies. Member states were urged to fulfill their financial contributions, facilitating the committee's expanded humanitarian efforts. The committee adopted a budget of US$2 million for 2026, along with the annual work program. During the session's conclusion, Ambassador Ali Mahmoud Bouhadma was re-elected as Chairman, and Ambassador Babiker Ba as Vice-Chairman, each for a two-year term starting July 9, 2026. The Chairman was also tasked with organizing the fortieth session's date and venue.
