Inspector-General of Police Vows to End Killings in Benue

Makurdi: The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged to put an end to the mindless killings in Benue and other regions across the nation. Egbetokun made this commitment during his visit to Governor Hyacinth Alia at the Government House in Makurdi.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the I-G assured the state's residents that the police force is committed to stopping the attacks and killings plaguing both Benue and the country. He emphasized that under his leadership, the police would leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrators of the crimes in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area. Egbetokun described the violent acts as attacks on the nation's sovereignty and integrity, which the police would not tolerate.

He vowed to increase the deployment of police personnel to assist in restoring peace in the state. Egbetokun stated, "These mindless acts of terror are not just attacks on Benue people but they are attacks on the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Any attack on any community in any part of the country is an attack on the entire nation."

The I-G further assured the public that the police would collaborate with other security agencies to ensure lasting peace in Benue State. He acknowledged the vastness of Benue's terrain and the security challenges it presents but promised adequate deployment to protect lives and property. He also committed to supporting the state with resources to combat the bandits and expressed condolences to the community affected by the recent tragic attack.

Governor Alia, in his remarks, stated that there was no justification for the violence at Yelwata or elsewhere in the state. He expressed gratitude to security agencies for their ongoing support in combating insurgency and urged for continued collaboration to uplift the spirits of affected communities. Alia voiced his hope that the joint efforts would lead to victory and a change in the current sorrowful narrative.
