Makurdi: The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Benue Chapter, has rejected calls by some of their colleagues for the declaration of a state of emergency rule in the state. State Overseer of the conference, Archbishop Alexander Nyoonkyegh, stated that Governor Hyacinth Alia was their brother in the vineyard and should be protected by true men of God.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, some bishops had earlier called for an emergency rule in Benue due to increasing insecurity. However, Nyoonkyegh emphasized that Benue does not require emergency rule but rather a united front to tackle the common enemy. He insisted that what the state needed at this crucial moment was unity and support for the governor to succeed.

Archbishop Nyoonkyegh reiterated the importance of supporting Governor Alia, highlighting that he was on the right path. He dismissed the idea of military takeover or emergency rule, citing concerns over the appointment of a non-local as a sole administrator, as happened in Rivers State. He also reminded that the Bible advises submission to authorities, adding that authority is granted by God.

He further expressed that as fathers of faith, they must continue to support their brother in the vineyard, Governor Alia, and pray for his success. Nyoonkyegh acknowledged the governor's efforts in addressing security issues and developing the state, questioning what fundamental offence the governor had committed apart from dealing with insecurity.

Nyoonkyegh also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support to the Benue people. He acknowledged the President's directive for the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, to relocate to the state to address growing insecurity. Since the arrival of the Chief of Army, Nyoonkyegh noted that there have been no further attacks, and he hopes for continued peace in the state.
